About Us

"Our mission is to educate, engage and empower youth and families through carefully designed, culturally and linguistically tailored programming
that is affordable, safe and affirming."

“SABURA” is Cabo Verdean Kriolu for fun! It’s the joy you feel at seeing a loved one or experiencing your passion. We chose this name to rebrand the experiences of education & recreation for Brockton area children and parents. We serve over 300 families in Brockton, MA including youth from diverse immigrant families—with a majority from Cabo Verde, and others from the Caribbean and Africa. Our parent group offers year-round programs and training for adult family members.

Programs are held year-round and include tutoring, English for Speakers of Other Langugages (ESOL), workshops, and events. Our signature is the summer program. The SABURA summer program is held for six weeks, between July and August, and runs from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 3pm. The wide-ranging activities include the following: Arts & Crafts, Sports (Basketball, Soccer, Jujitsu and Tae Kwon Do), Gardening, STEAM projects, music & dance, theater, writing and our trademark program, “Back to Our Roots” which is a class on culture, history and language. Children are encouraged to speak, write, and embrace their traditional language (CV Kriolu) and have opportunities to interact and practice using the language daily.

Summer also includes field trips, with a high rate of parent involvement. Summer outings have included: Martha’s Vineyard, Onset Beach, New Bedford Whaling Museum, CISCO Systems, Six Flags New England, the Brockton Pool, Franklin Park Zoo, Stone Zoo, Mystic Aquarium, and the Onset CV Festival. In addition to these outings, children are visited weekly in summer by various guest lecturers/role models—people from the very countries we serve, who have excelled in their professional fields and can share with SABURA participants their stories of struggle and success.
